What Zoom Remote Control Does During a Live Meeting

Zoom Remote Control is a built-in meeting feature that lets one participant temporarily drive another participant's computer while that person is sharing their screen. The workflow is deliberately permission-based: the sharer opens the Remote control option in the floating toolbar, or another participant clicks Request remote control on the shared screen tab, and a request appears as a pop-up. Nothing happens until the sharer approves it. Once approved, the guest takes over the mouse and keyboard, can open menus, edit files, and install software, while the sharer watches every action in real time. The feature exists for troubleshooting, coaching, and demonstrations, where describing a problem is far slower than simply showing the fix.

Availability depends on how the account and the operating system are configured. Administrators can turn Zoom Remote Control on or off at account, group, or user level in the Zoom web portal, allow clipboard sharing between the two machines, enable an auto-accept option so trusted colleagues skip the approval prompt, and restrict external guests from controlling internal screens. Windows, macOS, and Linux desktops support the feature, and an iPad or Android device can be granted control, while iPhone is not supported. Only one person can control a shared screen at a time, and a second approval revokes the first. Teams that need a permanent record of a session often pair a call with a Screen Recorder so the walkthrough can be reviewed later.

Benefits of Using Zoom Remote Control

The main benefit of Zoom Remote Control is that it collapses the distance between explaining a problem and fixing it. Instead of reading instructions aloud, waiting for screenshots, or escalating to a separate support tool, the person who knows the answer works directly on the machine that needs attention while the owner of that machine keeps watching. That makes it genuinely useful for onboarding, where a mentor guides a new hire through an unfamiliar application, for customer support, where a technician resolves a configuration issue in minutes, and for training, where a presenter hands the keyboard to a student during a live exercise. Because Zoom Remote Control requires explicit approval and lets the sharer take the mouse back by clicking, control stays reversible and transparent, and the whole exchange remains inside the meeting everyone already joined.

Zoom Remote Control features

Key capabilities and highlights.

Feature 1

Permission-Based Screen Control

Zoom Remote Control begins only after the person sharing their screen approves the incoming request in a pop-up notification that names the requester, so nobody can operate another participant's desktop, open private files, or change settings without an explicit, visible decision to allow it.

Feature 2

Real Mouse and Keyboard Input

The controlling participant can move the cursor, type, open menus, edit documents, and change settings on the shared machine exactly as if they were sitting in front of it, which removes the need to describe every step out loud while a frustrated user hunts for the right button.

Feature 3

Instant Reclaim of Control

Clicking anywhere on their own screen returns the mouse to the sharer immediately, and selecting Stop remote control in the floating toolbar ends access so the other participant cannot resume, while stopping the share altogether closes the session as well.

Feature 4

Clipboard Sharing Between Machines

When the clipboard option is enabled, text copied on the controlled computer can be pasted directly into the controller's own applications, which speeds up the transfer of error messages, log lines, file paths, and commands during a support call.

Feature 5

Give Control While Sharing

A presenter can open the Remote control icon in the floating toolbar and hand the mouse and keyboard to a specific participant by name, without ending the screen share, so a demonstration can continue smoothly while someone else drives the application on screen.

Feature 6

Control From a Tablet

Participants on an iPad or Android device can receive control and tap the remote icon to operate the shared desktop, panning and tapping across the screen while the desktop owner watches, which helps when a tablet is the only device available at that moment.

Feature 7

Account-Level Admin Settings

Administrators can enable or disable Zoom Remote Control for an entire account, a single group, or one user, allow clipboard sharing, expose an auto-accept option, and block outside guests from taking control of internal machines, then lock the settings so individuals cannot override them.

Feature 8

No Extra Remote Desktop Client

Because Zoom Remote Control runs on top of the screen share that is already active in the call, there is no separate remote desktop application to install, no port forwarding to arrange, and no second connection for the participant on the other end to accept.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about Zoom Remote Control.

Is Zoom Remote Control the same as remote support?

No. This feature gives a meeting participant mouse and keyboard access to a colleague's shared screen inside an ordinary call, while the separate remote support session is intended for deeper maintenance work such as restarting another participant's computer and depends on its own account setting.

Who can request control of a shared screen?

Any participant watching the share can click Request remote control on the shared screen tab in the Windows or macOS desktop app. In webinars the option is limited to the host, co-host, and panelists, and Linux users cannot start a request, only receive one.

Can someone take control of my computer without my knowledge?

No. Zoom Remote Control is strictly permission-based: each request arrives as a pop-up naming the person who asked, and nothing happens until you approve it. You can also switch the setting off so that requests never reach you at all.

How do I stop someone from controlling my screen?

Click anywhere on your own screen to take the mouse back, or open the Remote control option in the floating toolbar and choose Stop remote control so the other participant cannot resume. Stopping the screen share also ends the session.

Does Zoom Remote Control work on phones and tablets?

An iPad or Android device can receive control, and the participant taps the remote icon to start driving the shared desktop. It is not supported on iPhone, and the person sharing must be running a supported desktop app.

Why is the remote control option missing or greyed out?

In most cases an administrator has disabled it for the account, group, or user, or locked the setting so individuals cannot change it. The option also stays hidden when the shared content is not supported, such as a Zoom Doc, or when you joined the meeting from a Linux device.

Can two people use Zoom Remote Control on the same screen at once?

No. Only one participant can hold control at a time, and granting access to a second person automatically revokes the permission given to the first.

What happens to copied text during a remote session?

If the clipboard option is enabled, the participant with control can copy text from the shared machine and paste it into their own apps, which is convenient for moving error messages, file paths, or commands without retyping them.
