KopiaUI: Policy-Driven Encrypted Backups with a Desktop Interface

KopiaUI wraps the Kopia backup engine in a desktop and tray application, so snapshots, restores, and repository settings are handled from a window instead of a terminal. You connect a repository — a local or network folder, an object storage bucket, or a Kopia repository server — create a snapshot source for the folders you care about, and run it once to see what would be uploaded before committing. Policies then take over: how often to snapshot, which files to ignore, how much compression to apply, and how many daily, weekly, or monthly copies to retain. Snapshots can be browsed as a file tree, restored in place, or mounted as a read-only drive.

The engine behind the interface is the same one the command-line tool uses, so a repository created here can also be driven by scripts on a server. Backup data is split into content-defined chunks so repeated files are stored once, then compressed and encrypted before upload. Each source carries its own policy, so a photo library can keep monthly copies while a work folder keeps hourly snapshots. The estimate feature reports how much data a run would upload before it starts. Repository maintenance compacts and verifies stored data in the background, and the password can be saved in the system keychain. Comparing two folder trees by eye remains a separate kind of task, which is where Beyond Compare 5 fits.

Benefits of Using KopiaUI

The point of KopiaUI is that it puts a well-tested backup engine behind ordinary desktop controls, and the safety comes from the policy model rather than from remembering to press a button. A snapshot source is created once, then a schedule keeps it running: hourly for active work folders, once a day for everything else, with an estimate shown whenever you want to know what a run would cost in upload volume. Deduplication and compression mean that history is affordable, so keeping months of daily snapshots takes far less space than storing full copies would. Encryption happens before data leaves the machine, which matters when the destination is inexpensive cloud storage rather than a drive on your desk. Browsing snapshots as a file tree, restoring one document, or mounting an old snapshot as a read-only drive covers the situations that actually send people looking for a backup. Failures appear in the task history rather than disappearing silently.

KopiaUI features

Key capabilities and highlights.

Feature 1

Desktop and Tray Application

KopiaUI runs the backup engine in the background and keeps a tray icon for status, so scheduled snapshots continue while you work elsewhere. The window exposes repository connections, sources, policies, tasks, and restore options without sending you to a terminal for routine work.

Feature 2

Scheduled Policy-Based Snapshots

Each source has its own policy controlling snapshot interval, the time of day to run, and which files are ignored. A work folder can be captured hourly while a media library is captured monthly, and the schedule runs unattended from then on.

Feature 3

Deduplication and Compression

Backup data is divided into content-defined chunks, so duplicate blocks and unchanged files are not stored twice, and each chunk can be compressed before it is written. Keeping a long history of snapshots therefore costs far less space than full copies would.

Feature 4

Client-Side Encryption

Snapshots are encrypted before they leave the machine, with the repository password required to read them and the option to store it in the operating system keychain. A copy on cloud storage or a shared drive therefore stays unreadable to anyone who obtains it.

Feature 5

Connect to Many Repository Types

Repositories can live on a local or network folder, an SFTP or WebDAV server, object storage services, or a Kopia repository server shared by several machines. The same interface and policy model apply regardless of where the data ultimately sits.

Feature 6

Browse, Restore, and Mount Snapshots

Snapshots appear as a browsable file tree for the point in time you select, and files or folders can be restored to their original paths or somewhere else. A mount option exposes an old snapshot as a read-only drive, which is convenient when several files need checking.

Feature 7

Upload Estimate and Task History

Before a run is committed, an estimate reports how much data would be uploaded, which makes a large unexpected change obvious in advance. The task list records each snapshot, its duration, and any errors, so failures do not pass unnoticed on an unattended machine.

Feature 8

Repository Maintenance and Verification

Maintenance tasks run in the background to compact the repository and check that stored data is still readable, and verification can be scheduled alongside snapshots. Regular maintenance is what keeps a growing repository from slowing down or quietly accumulating damage over months.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about KopiaUI.

What is KopiaUI?

It is the desktop interface for Kopia, an open-source backup tool. Snapshots, repository connections, retention policies, and restores are handled from a window and a tray icon, while the same backup engine also remains available from the command line.

Where can KopiaUI store backups?

Repositories can be placed on a local or network folder, an SFTP or WebDAV server, object storage services such as S3-compatible providers or Backblaze B2, or a Kopia repository server. The backup format and policies are the same wherever the repository lives.

Are KopiaUI backups encrypted?

Yes. Data is encrypted on the client before it is uploaded, and reading a repository requires its password, which can be kept in the operating system keychain. That makes cloud storage and shared drives reasonable destinations even when you do not control the hardware.

Does KopiaUI run backups automatically?

Yes. Each source has a policy that sets the snapshot interval and time of day, and the tray application keeps the schedule running in the background. You can also take a manual snapshot at any time, and an estimate shows how much data a run would upload.

How much space do KopiaUI snapshots use?

Snapshots are deduplicated and compressed, so unchanged and duplicate data is stored only once. Keeping a long history of frequent snapshots therefore uses far less space than storing a separate full copy for each run.

Can KopiaUI restore individual files?

Yes. Snapshots can be browsed as a file tree, and individual files or whole folders can be restored to their original location or to a different path. An old snapshot can also be mounted as a read-only drive when several files need to be examined at once.
